Ontario is releasing a series of fact sheets on financial abuse, powers of attorney, fraud
awareness and planning, developed by the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Ministers Responsible
for Seniors Forum.

At their annual meeting, Federal, Provincial and Territorial (F/P/T) Ministers Responsible for Seniors agreed on the pressing need to address the opportunities and challenges associated with the country’s aging population.
For the first time in Ontario's history, seniors living in retirement homes across
Ontario will be protected under provincial legislation, the new Retirement Homes Act,
which received legislative approval on
June 2, 2010.

Minister Phillips and City Councillor Janet Davis helped the City of Toronto kick-off Seniors’ Month at Nathan Phillips Square on June 8. More than 500 seniors attended the Seniors Living in Diversity hosted by the Toronto Seniors’ Forum.
Gerry Phillips, Ontario’s Minister Responsible for Seniors, kicked off World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 in Toronto at a conference hosted by the Ontario Seniors Secretariat, in partnership with the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the International Federation on Ageing. The conference featured presentations on elder abuse from students across Canada, as well as guest speakers from around the world, including India and Australia.
Minister Phillips kicked-off Seniors’ Month on June 1 at Penny Wi$e – A Seniors’ Conference on Financial Abuse and Fraud Awareness, co-hosted by the Ontario Senior’s Secretariat and the Bank of Canada. The conference, held at the Metro Central YMCA, featured presentations on powers of attorney, frauds and scams and where to go for help.
To mark the 65 anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, Second World War veteran Sam Garnet, RCAF and Minister Phillips joined students and staff at Oakville Trafalgar High School to exchange stories, reflections and comments on the importance of remembering those who served in the First and Second World Wars. Grade 11 and 12 students who went to the European Battlefields over the recent March break made presentations about Canadian veterans whose graves they visited at the Canadian Military Cemetery, Beny-Sur-Mer, France.
Joining Minister Phillips (right) and veteran Sam Garnet (left) are students Allison Bishop, Hilary Fife and Julia Barber. The students presented their stories about three brothers who went to war: Albert, George and Thomas Westlake participated in the D-Day Battle of Normandy, June 6, 1944. George died the next day, June 7: Thomas and Albert died in each others arms on June 11.
